How “organic” is it?
With everyone hopping on the green wagon, it may be confusing to actually know how natural your so-called “organic” products really are. There aren’t tight laws on the use of the words “natural” and “organic.” Sadly, many times
companies may claim that their products are “all natural,” but in turn they actually contain preservatives and other chemicals. Just because a portion of the product’s ingredients are certified organic, doesn’t make the product itself organic.
For instance, most products from Nature’s Gate include chemicals and other additives along with certified organic ingredients. If you take a closer peek at the ingredients in their Persimmon & Rose Geranium Color Protecting Shampoo you’ll find things that aren’t so user friendly like: Alcohol, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Disodium EDTA, and Fragrance. The editor of Hair On The Brain was far from thrilled when testing out another one of their haircare products.
So how do you prevent yourself from getting duped? The best way to tell if a product is actually organic is to keep your eyes peeled for the USDA Organic Seal from the National Organic Program. At least 95% of the product’s ingredients must be organically produced to receive this mark. If you compare the ingredients of a product that has a USDA Organic Seal vs another drugstore type brand you will instantly see the difference. You’ll actually be able to read and comprehend the organic’s products ingredients because it will be made of natural oils and plant extracts, whereas the competitor will predominantly be chemicals. It’s also safe to seek organic beauty products at shops that carry a more natural philosophy in their merchandise assortment. Say for instance, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are fantastic places to begin experimenting with organic products. Once you’ve mastered knowing what to look for you can begin exploring other brands and cosmetic lines.
Currently, I’m really into Revolution Organics. They are full of multi-tasking products that fit into my multi-tasking lifestyle. All of their products are USDA certified and even meet airport security guidelines. So they might try to make you throw away your toothpaste, but they can’t take your hand creme! I love their Lip Therapy Balm and their All-Over Body Balm. The products are simple, come in durable containers, and of course the packaging is recyclable. www.revolutionorganics.com
To green up my hair routine I’ve been all about Simply Organic products. The
company sprung up in 2000 and has been leading the way in natural hair and body care products. While they do not have the USDA seal on all their packaging they are organic, and yes I can comprehend their ingredient list. Their hair products are actually used in some posh salons across the country. You know this is good stuff when green salons are picking it up. Also, Their packaging is gender neutral, so your dad, your brother, and your boyfriend can get their organic on without the frou frou. www.simplyorganicbeauty.com
