Beau Fib – a beautiful lie! (now playing)

I’m not really much for the theatre or even  musicals for that matter. This is LA, we don’t have a Broadway or an off Broadway. In turn LA has a bunch of small production houses that cater to those patrons seeking fresh talent and creativity. Last Thursday I ventured to one of these creative shops, The Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica for their showing of Beau Fib. What’s a “Beau Fib” you ask? It’s French for Beautiful Lie, a fitting title for a play and a character that are bit all over the place and a bit over the top.

The audience follows Beau Fib’s journey as he tries to figure out why exactly he’s wearing his good shoes. Along the way we enter Beau’s world and get acquainted with Perdu (Beau’s crush with a sassy personality), Father Christmas (a derelict priest, drunk), and a lovestruck solider who can’t get over his true love Honey (wild blond with whoreish tendencies, my fav character). Somehow they all wind up on the twisted and dark journey to make their way to Beau’s special event since he put on his good shoes.

The whole adventure is completely unpredictable and incorporates a live band and puppetry with lighting accents. Lets just say I didn’t think it would all end like it did. This is a musical, but not in a cheesy way, more in a humorous and emotional sense. After all Beau Fib has dark comedic elements, especially with creepy character St. Clowny. This is a grand adventure and seeing live acting, music, and singing is a much more impressive date night then dinner and a movie.

To dive into Beau Fib’s world you can purchase tickets through The Powerhouse Theatre box office or you can get discount tickets via Goldstar.

Hurry because the play only runs through November 21st!

These are some incognito photos I took of the theatre outside and a quick glimpse of the stage.
