Don’t drink and dive! (win a vacay from Malibu Rum)

Submitted by LAPretty on July 7, 2009 – 3:58 pmNo Comment

Malibu (the delicious alcoholic beverage, not the beach city), is giving drinkers and environmentalist the opportunity of a lifetime! Malibu rum is providing ten lucky winners the chance to be “beach interns.” Participants will be swapping their computer screens for sunscreen all for a good cause. 04_coral_reef_acropora_chromis_2Malibu is partnering with Reef Check, a non-profit dedicated to monitoring, protecting and rehabilitating coral reefs, to offer 10 budding environmentalists a chance to get a PhD in SPF by monitoring coral reef health in Thailand, the Maldives or the Philippines.

On July 1, passionate individuals 21+ may apply by visiting Malibu-Rum.com/ReefCheck. Beach interns will be sent on an all-expenses paid, 10-day internship, where they will learn about the local coral reef eco-system, monitor the reefs, snorkel, scuba dive and gain their certification all while getting their island on in a beautiful location.  It’s the internship that guarantees bragging rights, beach time and that feel-good satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping to conserve reefs around the world.

Participants will chart their progress via blog posts and social networking sites about conducting Reef Check surveys, take part in training sessions and become certified Malibu Reef Check EcoDivers. Through various social networking applications, Malibu hopes that the Beach Interns will help to virally spread the word and enlist others to raise awareness of coral reef malibu-le-webhealth.

“Malibu understands that young adults are actively interested in conservation and environmental issues, while still embracing the mentality of ‘getting their island on.’ The Malibu Beach Internship provides a perfect opportunity to make saving the world just another day at the beach,” says Lisa McCann, Senior Brand Manager for Malibu. “We know that beaches and reefs are inextricably linked, so the partnership with Reef Check was a
natural fit; the organization truly embodies the ideal of engaging the world in a fun and positive way while making a concerted difference.”

Also, in honor of this worthwhile cause-cation as I like to call it, Malibu is releasing a limited-edition bottle that’s available now. So drink and swim to save the coral reefs.
